I’m a terrible hoarder and I hate the thought of not having enough food in the house. Therefore, my cupboards and freezers (yes, I have more than one) are packed full of food.

I do think it’s a good idea to have a decent stock of kitchen essentials in such as pasta, rice, tinned tomatoes and tinned vegetables. I also think it’s good to have a well-stocked freezer. But, I don’t need to have quite so much! So, with that in mind, I’ve started a stocktake of all the food I have in my freezers. Using it, I’ll then create a menu for the coming couple of weeks using up the food.

There are three great outcomes to doing this:

  1. I’ll use up all the food I have and not have to throw any of it out.
  2. I’ll save money by not having to buy more food.
  3. I’ll eventually be able to empty, switch off and clean my spare freezers (I have two tabletop ones as well as a large freezer) and put them away. This will save me money on electricity.

In case you are wondering, I bought the spare freezers because the big freezer was packed full… because I wasn’t using the food up. I’m so annoyed with myself for doing that because I wasted money on the mini freezers and on the extra electricity that they use to function. Anyway…

My plan over the next couple of days is to defrost raw meat and batch cook as many different dishes as I can. We all love spaghetti bolognese in this house, so that will be one of the dishes I’ll make. I’ll make the sauce, portion it and freeze the portions. Note to self: remember to write on freezer bags what the food is this time!

Okay, so that’s me for today. I’m away to dig through my freezer and take note of the contents. Now, where is my pen?

Top Tip

If you have old towels that have seen better days, don’t throw them out. Cut them into cleaning cloths. You’ll get two cloths out of a hand towel and up to six (depending on size) from a bath towel. I also use old dishtowels as cloths. Saves money on buying cleaning cloths.

It’s great to incorporate those freezer foods into your meal plan in the coming weeks! We bought a big freezer several years ago and it has been a wonderful help to us. Our top freezer (above the fridge) is small so we only keep breakfast items and desserts (when we have any) in there, while the big freezer is for meats, cheeses, breads, and vegetables.

I’d love a larger freezer. I’d definitely batch cook more if I did and buy more items in bulk.
