Okay, so I’m not a fan of brown sauce (the most famous being HP Sauce, well in the UK anyway), but there are people in my family who are. And I’m sure some of you lot are as well.

So, with that in mind, I’ve pulled together some ideas to use up brown sauce.

Let’s begin with the classics…

Bacon Sandwich with Brown Sauce

Spread HP Sauce on your sandwich and then place fried or grilled bacon on top. The sandwich should be made with white bread and butter – don’t use brown bread as it just doesn’t taste right. Apparently, the tangy flavour perfectly complements the saltiness of the bacon. I wouldn’t know.

Cheese on Toast/Grilled Cheese Sandwich

My husband always put brown sauce on his cheese on toast and he loved it. It goes really well with the cheese. The best cheese to use is a good cheddar. If you don’t know how to make cheese on toast, it’s simple: get two slices of bread (I prefer white, but brown works too), toast one side of them under a grill, then flip over and cover with thin slices of cheddar cheese. Grill until the cheese is melted then squirt some brown sauce over it.

Sausage Rolls

Serve brown sauce as an accompaniment to sausage rolls. Put it in a small bowl and dip your sausage rolls in. Ooh posh!

Burger Topping

Drizzle your brown sauce over your burger or the bun for an extra layer of tangy flavour.

Meatloaf Glaze

This is one I might try, but I’m not sure. Here’s what you do: brush your brown sauce over the top of your meatloaf before baking for a lovely glaze. Here’s a nice meatloaf recipe from the BBC.

Stir-fry Sauce

Oh, come on! Really?? As a hater of brown sauce, I have to tell you I have never tried this, but according to the internet this is a thing. Add a spoonful of brown sauce to your stir-fry along with soy sauce, ginger and garlic.

Meat Marinade

Mix some brown sauce with vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and a tablespoon of brown sugar and marinate steak, chicken or port in it.

Shepherd’s or Cottage Pie

Add a dash of brown sauce to the meat filling (lamb mince for Shepherd’s Pie, beef mince for Cottage Pie) to deepen the flavours and give it rich undertones.

Put into BBQ Sauce

Add brown sauce into your favourite BBQ sauce for a unique and tangy sauce.

Spread it on Your Sandwich

Add brown sauce to your sandwiches. Spread it on buttered bread and then add cold meats such as roast beef, turkey or chicken.

Use as a Curry or Stew Base

Stir some brown sauce into your curry or stew for a smoky, savoury flavour that compliments meat and vegetables.

Gravy Enhancer

Add a spoonful of brown sauce to your gravy to give it a rich flavour. This is perfect (apparently) for pouring over meat and mashed potatoes.
