So, in trying to be more frugal, I’ve looked at ways to cut costs and one of those is on unhealthy drinks…specifically delicious and fizzy soft drinks. I don’t drink diet drinks because I believe that artificial sweeteners are extremely bad for you. However, I do have the odd small bottle of a dark fizzy drink that shall remain nameless, but you probably know the one I mean.
The 500ml bottle costs me £1.80 from our local shop and I usually have one a day. As a treat. In my head, I deserve this small treat because it’s inexpensive, it’s not alcohol, drugs or tobacco, and it’s only 500ml and really not that bad for me. That’s what I tell myself.
Of course, in my heart of hearts, I know it’s full of sugar and probably be terrible for my teeth and my weight. But, after a long day, it’s nice to enjoy a cold one straight out of the fridge.

However, in totting up how much buying one small bottle costs me annually, giving up completely is definitely very attractive. Add in the fact, if I’m buying one for myself, I also buy one for each of my kids, and it really tots up.
So, here’s the math: my 500ml of soft drink costs me £1.80 per day, that’s £12.60 per week, £54.75 per month and whopping £657 per year. Triple that (to take into account myself, my daughter and my son) and it’s getting into silly money: £5.40 per day, £37.80 per week, £164.25 per month and … gasp … £1,971 per year. That’s a holiday!!
So, as a major fizzy drinks fan, it is with a heavy heart that I am going to give up my daily tipple and try and save the money.
Wish me luck!

Top Tip: Get more out of your clothes by dying old, greying t-shirts, handkerchiefs, bed linens and towels. I did this recently and now have bright blue dish towels and vests, items that had gone grey with age. A 350ml tub of Ocean Blue Dylon Dye cost me £8.99 on Amazon and dyed quite a few things.
